Ordinance

Question for Magozac.
Have you considered making ordinance models with your resin skills?
You seem really good at making intricate pieces (some of the parts on the model kits are very small and finely detailed) so I was wondering if ordinance was something you'd thought of making.
I don't know if they would be cost effective etc, but it seemed like something that would suit your skills and (I'm guessing) would be comparatively quick to create.

Fair question!

It's something that has been discussed in the past, but ordinance is quite niche and not the most cost effective to produce. I guess Vaaish and I will discuss ordinance models for Battlegroup Helios at some stage, but at this point it's far more important to be producing larger models.
Oh yeah I can make that....

That makes sense.
I like ordinance models, but you are quite right that they are fairly niche as they are not vital to play (vital to play it PROPERLY!)
Helios ordinance would be cool, I'd like to see that down the road.
But obviously its not a priority thing to make.
It mainly just struck me as something you might enjoy making, as you seem to enjoy the smaller models and intricate bits the best.

I have my moments: it's nice to work in a variety of scales as each requires differing fabrication techniques. I have worked on a torpedo design in the past and it very nearly sent me mental. I don't remember if that was before or after I bought my lathe though, so these days I would turn it up from a piece of brass and then glue on some fins...

Oh yeah, I don't know much about making these things, but without a lathe I can imagine it would be maddening to try to make those.

As you implied there, a good advantage of working on something like torpedoes or fighters is that their small size would keep them fairly simple to work on (correct me if that's wrong!) But again, they are not really a priority thing for playing the game, more of a fun extra.

I wonder how cost effective it would be, since you would need quite a lot of ordinance for a fleet. A problem with the old forgeworld ones is the cost was so high it was hard to get enough for them to be useful.

I do want to get some torpedo markers, as they are one of the few things I don't have a proper model for. I was thinking of ordering some from the 3D printing site shapeways, as you can get a load pretty cheap on there.

I certainly wouldn't be able to do ordinance any cheaper than FW did. Strangely enough Shapeways seems to be the most economical way to get them...

The small size is a double edged sword: it can get quite frustrating trying to glue on minuscule pieces of styrene!

We still use the markers for ordnance.
On the specialist games site and in warp rift we have some cool alternative markers for various races.

If you want models of torpedoes it would already be sufficient to use the tops of toothpicks.
And for fighters, bombers, a-boats it might be even worthwhile to get some instamold thing. And make a tiny shape out of something.
Once I read a blog of someone who would only press aluminium foil (iirc) into a structure and use that as a casting to get small spaceships.
Perhaps I can find that link again.

Ah here:

the blog post from july 7 2013... no alu foil involved and I mixed somethings.

But for ordnance I can see the technique working.

Using markers instead of models for ordinance?
What is this madness?

Ow Harko, ordnance is so often fire & forget (1 phase on board) that it would be to much of hassle with models ;) .

And, yeah, it isn't proper casting but for quick & cheap work it was interesting to see on how to use a simple cardboard cut out to still get a 3d model with small details.

But without proper models, the one turn the ordinance is in place is a turn of SHAME!
SHAAAAAAME!

I have one set of oridinance painted silver and blue (using Imperial ordinance) and one painted red nad gold (using random oridinace from loads of manufacturers) so both sides look different.

I got a very large number of resin thunderhawks a while back that I need to paint up for marine fleets.

Didn't Vaaish design some ordinance that can hold a standard d6 dice on it to mark the power of the salvo?
