Troubles with easycast

Postby Pete » Sat May 14, 2016 10:03 am

Hi all,

Let me start by saying I'm a total newb at this, this has been my first attempt with resin and hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I was pouring it into these chrome emblems to create the black back and eventually going to pour clear over the top for a nice finish, but I've run into some trouble.

When I first tried, the surface looked nice and black but even the next day it was still a little tacky like it hadn't hardened, so I removed it and started another batch. This time it hardened pretty quickly but ended up a milky grey colour. So could the problem be that the dye is messing up the hardening somehow??
Also I tried to use this as a clear coat and it seems to dry white, so that didnt work either :(

Any pointers?
Thanks,
Pete

The first question to ask is what resin and what dye are you using? It's important that the two are compatible.
Oh yeah I can make that....

Hey mangozac,
The resin is Barnes 'easy cast' polyurethane resin and the pigment was opaque pigment for urethane and epoxy resin. Do they sound like an okay combo??
I was thinking, maybe I didn't shake them up enough??

Hi Pete, sorry I missed the "Easycast" in the thread title!

If the pigment is designed for polyurethane then there shouldn't be any issue there. Definitely make sure you shake the resin parts before pouring and always mix really well. Have you tried again?

Hi there,
I got it working, ended up using some super gloss timber resin. It has a way longer drying time but the finish is great and super hard! I think I'm going to pour a clear layer over the top too.
