Casting resin dice

Postby 1lc » Sat Oct 15, 2011 5:00 pm

Hi all

I'd appreciate some input and possibly a little dose of concrete reality...

I'm aware chessex does make custom dice; but i figured it can't be too hard to make my own custom dice out of resin.

A few things i'm not sure about and invite you all to comment on:

a) How well does resin roll/bounce?
b) What would be the best mold technique to use? Single split? two part?
c) Should i consider casting the dice in a material other than resin?
d) Is this an overly ambitious idea; to the point where it would be more efficient for me to just order dice from chessex?

Thanks

a) Resin would bounce and roll as well as any other plastic. It can be more brittle though, so unless your edges were nice and rounded there would be a change of breaking the corners.
b) You could use whatever mould technique you like!
c) Any other materials you could cast from would be much more difficult. I'm thinking metal casting ot injection moulding.
d) I'd just order the custom dice. It sounds like far too much work. Remember you'd have to trim off any mould gates and clean them up. And personally I'd be pretty hesitant to play against someone using home made dice.

Hope that helps!
Oh yeah I can make that....
