New to RA

Postby Prototyper » Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:13 am

Just wanted to thank you for all the useful info I have used in the last month. I started working at
a company as a prototype modeler. I got thrown right into resin casting. It was either sink or swim. Well if it wasn't for this site I would have drown 2 weeks ago. Thanks to this site I was able to cast a very new high tech handheld device. Really need to get a new pressure a different pressure pot. The bomb looking thing I have is way to huge. Its 100gal. It takes way to long to to degas my silicone. If my 3d printer would work I would be set now.
Thanks for all the great info.

Hi prototyper, thanks for the feedback. It's great to know that all of the information we're compiling here is so useful to so many people, especially to those in a professional situation like yourself!
Oh yeah I can make that....

I have separate vacuum and pressure tanks.

For the pressure I'm using a 2.5 gal paint pot. Some day I will get the lever action clamps mounted but for now it's slow screw type clamps.

My vacuum pot is based on the design at the bottom of this page
http://www.lumicast.com/equipment.html#PRESSURE
I used 1/4" steel pipe and plate, welded at a professional shop, 1.4"NPT pipe nipples for the plumbing and a 1" acrylic plate for the lid. With a 6.0 CFM vacuum pump (automotive AC service type) I can draw 29" hg vacuum in about 30 seconds and done degassing in a minute.

Well I have a combo pot. I want to get a 5 gal just for fast degassing.
This takes way to long to get to where I need it to.

Here is my combo

Nice, wish I had the time to build models that used a tank like that.

Have you considered using a plug that would fill unneeded space?
Even with a small pressure tank I found it worthwhile to fill most of it with foam insulation when using small molds. It greatly reduces fill time which is important with fast curing resins.
