The Dougram Misadventure (almost)

Postby paulson games » Fri Nov 18, 2011 4:47 am

While looking for some N-Scale models to use with Battletech I saw a set of Armored Soldier Dougram stuff up on ebay for $25 (shipping included) The listing had wonderful Engrish descriptions (yes engrish not english) The measurements were listed as 2.5-3 inches, so I figured that's about right for N-scale.

The stuff arrived today with a slight problem, it's all about 1.5 inches tall so it's half the height I was expecting, Doh!

But not all is lost as several of them are just about in perfect scale to use in place of old unseens, and with the price they are slightly cheaper.

Here's what you get:

Here's some scale shots:

Sadly the Wolverine is probably a bit too big to fit CBT scale.

The griffin shadowhawk and scorpion heads are all mounted on a peg and pop off so they can be attached to the underside of the helicarrier.

The bushman isn't posed for anything other than being carried, or perhaps fighting on a very windy battlefield.

Dougram was a Japanese series form the late 70's that pre-dates Battletech. When Battletech started up they liscensed the rights to the robot designs from Dougram, Macross and several other series to form a mix match of designs to use for their 1st edition Battletech game.

Dougram is only owned by one company so the designs didn't end up in the legal hell hole state that the Macross/Robotech designs did (which is being fought over by 3 companies). Battletech had to renegotiate their rights to Dogram about 3 years ago but they are able to keep using the old images. Basically it shook out as they could continue using the older art that featured those mechs without hassle but they wanted the designs tweaked for future products.

They modified the current batch of models and drawings so that they aren't the original designs but are close enough in profile that they are instantly reconizeable as revisions of those mechs.

That rifle in the lower shot would make a very cool heavy cannon weapon. If one drew in the length a bit. :o

Shorten the barrel? remove it entirely? or shorten the entire weapon down?

I like the design for it as well, would be pretty easy to mock up in 3d. Possibly as an over the shoulder mount?

The detail on the pieces isn't particuarly high but it's not any worse IMO than their battletech counterparts. I think with a recoat of paint they might actually look slightly better as they are at least a bit more dynamic. I'll need to remove the antenae on the griffins and replace them with brass rod as they are way to thick and rubbery looking.

Removing the barrel altogether would give a very cool unique look...
