Games Workshop kills Specialist Games

Postby aussiekirgan » Sun May 05, 2013 7:47 pm

I couldn't find it on the forums here, but assume the great and good around know. If this is a repeat, let me know and I'll pull this down.

I couldn't find anything official, but the forums are full and Forgeworld is 95% out of stock on all their Battlefleet Gothic and Epic Armageddon product.
A little more stuff is available on the main GW site, but yep, it's happened... I'm pretty grumpy.

Great quality models, great game, great stories, it sucks.

It's really quite frustrating to see this all unfolding.

Its not un-surprising though, as the tiny volume of items they sell from the range. It makes sense for them to stop selling it. In a way its the customers fault for not buying more of it ;)

It is a shame but Alan is right: it was only a matter of time before such low volume, niche products got the chop. We'll just have to encourage more scratchbuilding ;)

It just goes to show that they have become a profit focused company rather than a hobby focused company.

Sadly, I think that happened a long time ago.

The above certainly reflects the dialogue out there in the world..
Its a sad story getting sadder in my opinion - however I think it's great places like this that will keep the great stories and great games going.

Incredible that Forgeworld went out so fast though, they must have either been producing on demand already, or just had bugger all stock left anyhow.. I'm not sure what it means for Aeronautica Imperialis though, they have some gorgeous models and the standard Thunderhawl is already out of stock. Given that was FWs pet game, maybe it really wasn't working out..

Interestingly the order with FW I placed a week ago only went out yesterday - they've obviously been inundated with orders as I didn't think that they would cast on demand (especially since the site shows stock levels).

From what I heard AI is supposed to be getting the chop as well.

Just got an email from GW that my order will not be sent for another week or two... Pretty lame.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. People at my local GW were just starting to play again and the store has been displaying the painted fleets in the cabinets. I've been trying to build a few fleets as money and time allowed with two little kids over the last few years hoping they wouldn't kill the product line yet. Would have been nice if they gave some advance notice rather than "we're done. Buy what is left and we don't give a s!#t about this stuff." I still needed a couple Solaris and Aurora models to finish and round out my eldar fleet. Guess I should have picked them up when I bought the Fortress (which came with most of the little details broken off) and all the support fleet vehicles last month. I managed to pick up one of each blister of ork ships except the killa kroozer before they were off the website. Guess I will have to wait for everything to hit ebay for 3 times the price and give a try at scratch building and casting.

For the prices things will start going for en ebay you could make you own moulds of the ships you have and make personal duplicates in resin?

Don't get me started on the snapped off details on the Ramilies models! Their packaging people must be retarded or something to not think that letting those parts bounce around in a box travelling half way around the world isn't going to do any damage...

Like you said before Zac, it's all about getting a bit more emphasis on scratchbuilding - What always shocked me about GW metal was their inability to get a straight line! I Bought a few of the admech ships and the BB had curved lines all over it - and this was a more recent release!
And what, 45GBP for the Ramillies? Yeah, you'd expect a bit of quality. Well, I've ordered some styrene to get playing around, and my last bit is coming in soon - looking forward to it ;)

Don't get me started on the Ramilies. It really was a shockingly badly cast and packaged model. It's a shame because it's such a stunning design.

I'm already seeing a surge of scratchbuilding and that makes me happy. Certainly look forward to seeing what you do with your newly acquired styrene. It's dangerous that the hobby store near me has a full rack of Evergreen styrene. At 7 bucks a pop it's expensive but when you just want something in particular being able to race down the road and pick it up in invaluable. That said a pack lasts forever when doing stuff like BFG.

I bought my Ramilies when it went out of stock and then came back into stock about 3 months ago. The casting is beautiful.... But they threw it in a bag and tossed it in a box. So much little detail was in the bag. I believe there are a few pieces which will look okay when I get it all glued back on and I can recast those pieces. Yep I am hoping to get an Aurora, Solaris, eldar transport and fighters, and the killa kroozer and then recast it all in plastic when I start building the fleets. If that doesn't happen I will have to get good at scratch building
