Resin Addict Forum Retirement

Postby mangozac » Fri Feb 10, 2017 9:38 am

I have sent this message as an email to all members, but in case it wasn't received I thought I should announce it here also.

The Resin Addict Forum has for eight years been an invaluable resource for so many people, only a fraction of which have actually joined and expanded on the discussion here. It makes me happy to know that we've been able to provide so much casting knowledge for so many people.

We started this forum because back in 2009 the discussion of casting techniques on mainstream wargaming hobby forums was almost verboten. A photograph of silicone moulds would get moderators all in a tizz! But now look where we are: so many small wargaming companies have popped up in the past 8 years, many doing their own resin casting. Casting has become a standard topic on all forums and people discuss it freely. It would be a bit delusional of me to think that this change was accelerated by anything I have done, but for a period this forum was a great resource for those who wanted to openly discuss casting techniques relating to wargaming miniatures.

With casting now being an openly accepted topic elsewhere the Resin Addict Forum is no longer particularly necessary. Personally, my interests have shifted somewhat and I no longer have the time or inclination to operate the forum any more.

It is with very mixed emotions that I announce that the Resin Addict Forum will be retiring from the 1st of March 2017.

I do however acknowledge the wealth of information contained within, so rather than dissolve the site completely my intention is to simply lock the forum into a read only state. It will still be completely accessible and readable for everybody but from the 1st of March there will be no new
posting or editing. Private Messaging will also be locked. You should still be able to login and view existing private messages, but if you have any important messages you'd like to keep please save it to your computer.

Please use the time before the lock to exchange contact details with anybody with whom you'd like to keep in touch.

I'd like to thank everybody for their support of the Resin Addict Forums over the past 8 years. Without your input and exceptional behaviour the wealth of knowledge we have here would never have reached this level.

All the best!

 Thanks for running it for so long mate. Even locked, there's a wealth of advice contained within, which will hopefully help those who take the time to look for it!

This is sad to see; though it's true that we're not exactly abuzz with activity here... I think I more wish that we were.

Thanks guys. Yes, it's a shame that things have died down, but that's a part of life ;)

Damn. :(

Lurking for some years and collecting information for if/when getting a bit more serious with casting. Used the talks about 3d printers to keep up to date. Sent some people this way when they asked in other places.

Independent & thematic sites seem to be going down. Spam is not helping, neither people moving into walled gardens without thinking of the consequences.

Thanks anyway, specially for not closing it but keeping it readable.

Personally, I blame people's use of Facebook for the dropping popularity of specialist forums. It isn't a better solution, and is terrible as a repository for information, but people have become lazy and don't want to go to other sites, when they're already there, liking cat videos and alienating friends with contrary political leanings...

Ive been lurking for a few months but never managed to make my first post! So I want to say a big 'thank you' to @Mangozac and all of the others who have made this such a brilliant resource.

Ive been reading so many old threads and picking up so much useful info that as a direct result I felt confident enough to buy a pressure pot this week and Ive now successfully convert for resin casting. Definitely wouldnt have got to there without the RA forum. Cheers!

Thought I'd post a few words here to thank mangozac for all the hard work and contribution to this excellent forum. Very disappointed to see it discontinued. Would there be any chance a new moderator could be appointed?.
I didn't post all that much but helped others where I could , and in returned was given good advice to solve some of my problems when they arose.
In all, the advice I read from other users of this forum over several years was always good and of a high standard. All the best for the future mangozac and Thanks

I've lurked this forum a few years, and I just registered to say thank you for the help and advice I've gotten here. I would have joined sooner, but the spam posts had me concerned about what was going on here. This post answers that question.

Posts on this forum led me to the Grizzly paint pot which has been awesome, this is the conversion I did based on info here
I also learned here that it's possible to cure molds under pressure, this has been valuable as it saved me the expense of vacuum equipment. For the stuff I do vacuum hasn't been necessary.

Like others have said I'm sad to see this great forum come to an end. But at least it will remain readable for anyone who may find the info herein as useful as I have. Thank you again to all who have contributed here.

Thanks for the comments, guys! I appreciate all of the kind words :)

Johncast, I did float the idea of somebody else taking over but there simply wasn't a suitable, willing candidate. Such a person would need to have decent IT skills, as well as an interest and knowledge about casting.

I think Fleafa hit the nail on the head regarding Facebook, and like I have said, casting discussion on more mainstream forums is now much more acceptable. The Resin Addict Forum really is no longer a necessity, but the invaluable knowledge contained herein will still live on as an archive.

Walled garden was my polite way of saying FB and their ilk. ;) They are more about control than open information. Data in, even behind your back, but hardly data out.

First post since I registered over six years ago ...

Thank you everybody for making this community something special, even for those only lurking. I didn´t visit much for about 15 month as I don´t cast/sculpt myself and my hobby shifted more towards boardgames lately, but it always was a pleasure to read this forum.

@mangozac: will your emailadress for Contact stay valid or is it gone with the lockdown ? If gone please send me a replacement adress, I don´t have any of those ball turret weaponbatteries yet and would hate to miss my last chance to get some :)

Hope you all keep well and again THANK YOU !

Is there any possibility of leaving a lone section open, The Last Chance Saloon if you will, or is it too much work to maintain regardless?

If not, where do the rest of you call home? My home was ultimately here, and now I'll need to find where you guys make port to keep in touch!

Last Chance Chat Salon isn´t bad idea. I don´t use Facebook too a from time to time I go look here what´s new.
I´m not sure about new user registration. I saw here lately some spam accounts. Not sure how up date is phpBB. Because this is primary time consuming and then checking new accounts.

Changing sections read only takes only some time to change usergroups rights. But some sections or threads should be open for members. May be, set up section with Salon name and transfer/create here few interesting topics.

Btw thanks for your hard work here Zac.
