New to Resin Casting, best tool for drilling eye pin holes

Postby Valvaren » Mon Oct 20, 2014 5:40 am

I'm very new to resin casting, i'm currently waiting of my first order of Mold Star 15 and Smooth Cast. I've been looking around for a drill to use to drill holes in my casting for eyepins. I've basically figured out I need something like a little dremel tool with bits for wood instead of glass. I'm sorta of looking for an exact item to purchase instead of just buying whatever i see first.

I hope I gave enough information! Thank you for your help in advance!

You just need some small drill bits. What diameter are the pins?
Oh yeah I can make that....

They look to be about a millimeter thick

You'll be able to buy a 1mm drill bit from any hardware store. Just stick in in a dremel and off you go (note however you'll need the correct size collet to hold the 1mm drill in the dremel chuck).

I use a very tiny drill bit in a standard Dremel. It just came in a set of bits - I can get the brand/details if you like but I don't believe it was a specialist purchase.

I use screw-in pins but occasionally they were breaking as I turned them, so now I pre-drill before screwing in and it works great. I'd add E6000 glue too if they didn't have a screw thread but I think they're secure enough.

Incidentally, depending what you're making you could embed a tiny transparent plastic tube inside it (with the ends blocked, and just clean those up after) - saving yourself the trouble of drilling.

When you do drill, if you're working with something transparent, you'll see the hole appear to turn white - same old problem of sanding/scratching surfaces - they go opaque. Sanding surfaces is a whole other essay but for something as small as the drilled hole I don't have any problems with running a bit of glue through it on a pin, or a bit more resin - just to coat the sides - that brings it back clear again. I'm not a big fan of mixing materials (varnishing resin etc) but for that little thing it does the trick and I'm sure can't hurt anything :)

These are the bits I use for pins and findings:
