advice for the best cast

Postby pod1138 » Wed Jan 28, 2015 11:13 pm

ok i'm working on a project and 1 of the parts i'm looking to cast is bulky (7"x4"x5"). Now heres my problem if i cast it in resin apart from vaining & shrinkage my real problem is weight, i'm looking at 3Kgs for 1 part. What can you recommend ?

needs, a clean cast for detail & less weight?

Hi, well if it's acceptable for the part to be hollow, then rotocasting could be an option.

other than that, your looking at introducing a filler to the mix with a lighter density than the resin itself, it certainly wouldn't be a conventional filler and as you point out such a large item will generate a lot of heat and may warp in the mould no matter what you mix with it.

Rotocasting is often used in the prop making industry. The RPF may have members with more expertise in producting large items in resin.

Indeed, rotomoulding is the best solution. If you keep having shrinkage issues you might want to look at using polyurethane resin instead...
Oh yeah I can make that....
